For Hire Wire - Week 8

By Tony Wilson on Wednesday, 28th October 2009

for hire wireIf your favorite team lost, it’s likely they were blown out. That also means that a lot of fantasy players had some explosive performances. However, many players involved in those blowouts didn’t perform up to par. Luckily, there were plenty of players available on most waiver wires to help get you out of your slump.

Quarterbacks

Alex Smith - 49ers: Smith threw two touchdowns in the past two years for San Fran. On Sunday, he threw for three. He also had a pick, but who really cares? The fact that Smith came in for Shaun Hill and performed well is simply amazing. He’s already been named starter for Week 8, so that’s a great sign for Smith. This could be what Smith needed to live up to that No. 1 receiver potential.

Running Backs

Shonn Greene - Jets: Leon Washington broke his leg and is out for the year. In comes Greene, the new No. 2, but he played like a solid No. 1. Greene rushed for 144 yards on only 19 carries. He also added a TD. If you don’t have him yet, make sure you get him; Thomas Jones only has so much left in the tank.

Ricky Williams - Dolphins: With Ronnie Brown taking most of the looks, and getting most of the numbers, Williams has gone by the wayside in many leagues. But with his three-TD performance against the Saints, he should be picked up. The Dolphins can’t do anything aside from running, which is good for his owners.

Wide Receiver

Miles Austin - Cowboys: If you had any doubts in Austin before, they should be gone by now. Austin’s latest masterpiece, a 171-yard, two touchdown performance makes the guy legit. Dallas looks as though they’re putting it together, and Austin is leading the way. If he’s still available, make sure you pick him up.

Brian Hartline - Dolphins: Hartline’s been coming on pretty strong in Miami. Chad Henne seems to have found a reliable target, and college rival Buckeye, in Hartline. He had three catches for 94 yards, and nearly a touchdown, in the loss to the Saints. He’s not a sought-after guy, so make sure you get him while he’s available.

Tight Ends

Spencer Havner - Packers: Jermichael Finley seems to be hurt for a while, giving Havner more reps at tight end. Donald Lee has had some serious issues catching the ball, so Havner could get the passes Lee and Finley would have gotten. While he’s a blocking tight end, he’s shown the ability to make plays after his 59-yard and a touchdown game in the win over Cleveland.
