Fantasy Gameplan - Week Six

By komments on Wednesday, 8th October 2008

You have to love people who are not afraid to go out on a limb and make predictions as to what players you should start or sit. Especially when they are forced to stay away from the obvious.

At Fantasy Sports Group our goal is to provide you with information you can use! Anyone can tell you to start Drew Brees or Frank Gore. It doesn’t take a genius, or even a modicum of courage, to tell you to sit a player like Tony Scheffler who was injured last week.

But for someone to tell you to sit Chris Johnson, a top 10 back who catches the ball, in a point per reception league like three of our prognosticators did last weei? Well that takes courage and vision. Or to start Kyle Orton like Derek did last week? That is the type of advice you need to win your leagues.

We look at each position’s top 10 and make the hard calls as to who should sit or start. And we go even deeper when predicting starters at RB, WR, DL, LB or DB. Why? Because in almost every league you are in, the 20th ranked RB is still a starter. So we make our analysts dig deeper.

But going out on a limb is easy if you are not held to account for outrageous predictions. That is why we score all of our picks. And then report those scores back to you. This column will be used to bring out the best, and worst, predictions of the preceding week.

It will also list the coming week’s Booms & Busts!

Finally, it will track the cumulative scores of each of your host’s picks and those of our guests.

Week Five
Our Week Four prognosticator was David Grey. David and I met back in the days of Fantasy Asylum. Even then he was dispensing outstanding fantasy advice and his Grey Report remains one of the preeminent articles for ranking players on a weekly basis. Best of all — it is now free on FantasyFootball.com.

Heading up the week was JC who came in with 48 points — the second best weekly score all year. JC was a perfect 9 for 9 with his week five bust predictions. Can’t get much better than that. His best Bust prediction was Santana Moss who failed to score a single point. Nice call JC. He didn’t miss a pick but JT O’Sullivan garnered him his fewest points. His best Boom pick was that of WR Andre Johnson who topped the wide receiver rankings in week five despite, or maybe because of, his starting quarterback being a very late scratch. JC struck out on Brian Urlacher, one of only three misses in his Boom section.

JC was followed by our guest David with 44 points, Greg with 29 and Derek with 28. Derek will be taking over for Cliff for the remainder of the season. Our guests remain firmly entrenched in third place, qualifying them for two trophies. David moves to the top of the guest rankings while Ken Kellogg is holding on to the second best score.

Thanks for playing David and for maintaining our guests third place ranking.

Week Six
Our Week Six prognosticator is Aqualyn Johnson-Kellogg.

Aqualyn is my brother Ken’s wife and is relatively new to the hobby of fantasy football. She was introduced to the game last year and loved it so much she is now a regular on all of our podcasts and competes in about 20 leagues. Wow — that is more than I do! Good luck AJ!

Summation
We remain very strong in our Bust recommendations. For the week, we nailed 33 of 36 recommendations (92%). For the year our overall Bust record moves up to 85% (153 of 180). Try matching that at home - 85% of our recommendations to bench top 10 players at their respective positions have been correct over the first five weeks. Who says you should always start your studs? Better yet — try tracking some of our competitions recommendations. They are quick to point out their successes, but re-listen to their shows and write down ALL of their predictions. See if they can match our results. Then see if they are recommending sitting top 10 players. We are and we are doing so remarkably well.

Picking Booms is much more difficult but we still managed to hit on 12 of 36 recommendations (33%), despite my own oh-for. For the year, we are at 37% (66 of 180). Here’s hoping I can improve enough we can top the 40% mark next week!

If you would like a shot at winning a trophy proclaiming you the prognosticator of the year, shoot us an email at staff@fantasysportsgroup.com and we will schedule you for a future show.

If you want to be able to use our Booms and Busts for your lineups, you need to listen LIVE every Tuesday night from 7:30 to 9:00 pm ET to be among the first to hear these predictions! But if you miss the live show, you can still click on the link and listen to the archived copy. And if you like the show — leave a comment and a rating to let us know.

Or you can call in at (347) 826-9620! We LOVE taking calls on the air!
