Peyton Manning was supposed to solidify his legacy with a win in SuperBowl XLIV. Every son dreams of following in their father’s footsteps, to play for the same team as their father, and to throw a game winning touchdown for that team. Indeed, Manning’s dream came true. He did throw a game winning touchdown for the New Orleans Saints in the SuperBowl.
Isn’t Fate great? Manning’s Legacy is now tarnished. He is not as great as he was before he played that game. That is all you hear now, and it’s getting quite old rather quickly. There is no doubt that Manning is one of the greatest QB’s that has played the game. From NFL MVP, Superbowl MVP, and also Superbowl Champion, his numbers and success prove that much. Dan Marino does not have some of these and yet without a doubt his legacy never seems to be tarnished.
Manning and Tebow are not that different from each other really. Much like Manning’s Super Bowl loss questions his legacy, Tebow’s legacy is in question before it even begins. I know you are about to scream at me, “Tebow hasn’t even been drafted yet. You can’t compare the two of them.” Well, Duh, I know he hasn’t been drafted yet.
There is no doubt that Tebow is one of the greatest athletes that we have ever seen in the college ranks. Period. The End. Yet, so much doubt is raised about his success in the NFL. Even Joe Theisman, the nicest of the nicest NFL commentators, ripped on Tebow’s mechanics and how Urban Meyer & Florida lack the ability to develop talent for the next level. Hello, Urban Meyer developed Alex Smith in Utah. I know Alex Smith isn’t the poster child of successful NFL QB’s, but he isn’t completely horrible. I have dogged Tebow’s entire career. I will be the first one to say that I hoped Alabama would have kicked Tebow in the nuts. It might be the Bayou Bengal in me, but I do not have much admiration for Florida players, unless the name is Emmitt Smith.
So the critics have started saying, H-Back, Slot Back, Scat Back, maybe even Hunch Back. With so many possible positions for Tebow to not play QB, you must wonder if he will get the chance to play QB. Tebow will forever be known as “The University of Florida QB”. I believe he needs to change his name if he plans to move to another position and that name change could catapult him to even new heights.
